img/Grand Kav 1.jpg img/Grand Kav ridden.jpg

Grand Kavalier was imported from Germany having already passed his 100 day performance test being awarded 8's for both character and rideability.  He is a licensed stallion with both the AWHA and the ACE Group.

Grand Kavalier represents the finest in German performance horse breeding since the early 1800's.  A fully documented 8 generation pedigree is available from Cloverfern.  Most of the highest performing International competition German warmbloods over the last century boast bloodlines from Grand Kavalier's impeccable pedigree.

An accident resulted in Grand Kavalier being unable to prove himself in the competition arena under saddle.  With his outstanding movement and presence he exudes quality and is without doubt a great loss to the dressage world.

His progeny, however, are proving themselves worthy of their heritage.  Grand Kavalier is well known for passing on his elevated and correct movement.  His offspring can be expected to inherit his exceptional temperament.

Grand Kavalier was Champion WB Stallion & Champion Open Breed Stallion at Melbourne Royal Show 1999.

Grand Kavalier is a delight to own and handle, a "people's horse" he is affectionate, sensible and very willing to please.  His progeny are renowned for possessing the same character traits, known particularly for their calm natures and high trainability.  Cloverfern prides itself on producing horses that inherently possess temperaments that make them a joy to train and own.

Grand Kavalier's stud fee is $1485 (GST inc) and has a live foal guarantee.

The Trakehner breed is the oldest organised warmblood breed in the world, officially begun in 1732 by the East Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm I. For a brief introduction to the extraordinary history of the Trakehner, scroll down to the end of the stallions section on this page.

APH Spiegels pedigree mirrors the history of the Trakehner breed. A fully documented pedigree to eight generations is available from Cloverfern and through his Grand dam Kassiopeia, his pedigree is traceable to the black mare Kleebat foaled in 1780 at the Trakehnen Central Stud.

Spiegel himself stands as a magnificent example of Trakehner breeding. Himself a proven performance horse, he embodies the elegance and beauty of the breed, well known to be the most attractive of the warmblood breeds.  Consistent introductions of Arabian and thoroughbred blood have contributed to giving Spiegel a spectacular head, an athletic frame and floating movement, all of which he passes on to his offspring.

Spiegel is graded FEI and has been State and / or National Champion at most levels up to and including Advanced level dressage.  He has twice been Barastoc Warmblood of the Year.  At the age of 20 he continues to be highly competitive at FEI dressage.

The Trakehner Breed

Initially during the 1600 and 1700s, Trakehner horses were bred for the Royal stables and later developed in purpose-bred military horses, considered the best in Europe throughout the 1800s and into the 1900s. The State Stud, Trakehnen traditionally held the very best breeding stock with many other studs throughout East Prussia fostering other breeding stock.

The history of the Trakehner breed is fascinating particularly as during the Russian invasion of 1944 it was almost completely destroyed. In just 60 years the breed has been systematically rebuilt such that Trakehners are once again taking their place as consistent with the world's best performance horses, earning World Championship and Olympic titles.

Prior to the invasion in 1944 over 27,000 Trakehners were registered. In the single greatest performance test placed upon any breed of animal in history, the horses were evacuated over 1200 kilometres through war-torn countryside in -20 degrees Celsius. Central Trakehnen Stud horses were kept at a constant trot and driven by boys under 16 years and men over 65, the only men in East Prussia not fighting the Russians.

By 1947 there were 700 registered mares and 60 stallions that had survived the evacuation and early years in East Germany. 18 mares survived from the Central Trakehnen Stud and none of the original 14 Trakehnen Stallions had made it to safety in East Germany. This handful of horses became the basis for the revival of the breed.

Spiegel's bloodlines include 12 of the 14 stallions held at Trakehnen in 1944 prior to the evacuation. The dam of his great grandsire Impuls, Italia, survived the evacuation heavily in foal and with shrapnel imbedded in her leg. Italia was a Trakehnen mare with an almost perfect assessment score of 1,2,0/0,1 where 0 is a perfect score. The 18 surviving Trakehnen mares feature prominently in Speigel's breeding representing the very best in bloodlines developed over more than 200 years of coordinated breeding.

Unlike other warmblood breeds, Trakehners may not be outcrossed with any other warmblood breeds, only Arabians and Thoroughbreds may be used. Trakehners have however been used extensively in the breeding programs of other warmblood breeds to improve type, particularly prior to the second World War. Grand Kavalier has several Trakehner horses in his pedigree that are also present in that of APH Spiegel.
